This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Now that I'm starting to have some success publishing in literary magazines, I've been told that I should create a website to publicize my work. Should I do it myself? (and if so which venue) Hire someone? And once I have it, what do I do with it?
» Getting a website can be a great way to control the way people generally have their first professional (online) encounter with you. There are lots of ways to go about doing this now that don’t necessarily require hiring someone. My own author website is hosted on Squarespace and I’ve designed it myself (thankfully, the Squarespace editor is super easy and drag-and-droppy!). You can also use Wix or LinkTree or Carrd to create simpler landing pages. Take a look at some author websites of people you admire and get some inspiration from there!
Is it rude to ask an author with a much bigger platform if they are available for hire to edit an essay? I know authors receive requests from randos all the time asking if they’ll read manuscripts. This seems rude because it assumes that not only would they have time to read an entire manuscript, but they’re being asked to do it without pay. Does it make a difference given the scenario I’m describing? I know there are authors who advertise editing services. The author I have in mind does not. I just love their work, value their opinions, and would definitely pay for their feedback.
» There is absolutely nothing wrong in asking this but it also largely depends on your relationship with them (if any). Many times, if they act as a mentor for you already, then they may not expect some kind of renumeration (though it’s nice that you want to offer this from the get-go). And other times, if they do have that “bigger” platform and don’t know you too personally, then they may not have the time to help you out, so in that case it is also nice that you’re saying up front you’d like for this to be a professional arrangement, if such an arrangement is possible at all. I think as long as your polite and clear (and ready for a no or non-response), you can get away with quite a bit!
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline.
And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
As always, as an extra thank you to paid subscribers, we’ve included a spreadsheet download at the end.
