We’re beta launching a casual weekly submissions accountability hour! Come hang out and submit your work with us. If you can’t tell from the title, we’re keeping it low key. We’ll be there to answer questions but it’s mostly an excuse to do this really tedious (and pretty intimidating) thing together.
We’ll be trying out a few different times and days till we find a couple that work for the most people. Here are the upcoming dates (feel free to sign up for more than one):
Wednesday (September 25th) 4:00 PM EST | REGISTER HERE
Thursday (October 3rd) 9:00 AM EST | REGISTER HERE
Tuesday (October 8th) 11:00 AM EST | REGISTER HERE
If folks like these and everything goes well, we’ll make them a weekly recurring feature here at Sub Club.
This week, we’ve got:
15 Recently Opened Submission Calls
2 Last Chance to Submit
11 Theme Calls To Inspire You!
5 Always Open
6 New Friends (new listings we’ve added to our database)
5 Contests
This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Social media questions related to interacting with other non-famous writers or indie lit writers: 1) Is it gauche/annoying to tag another creator on Instagram (who I don't know) if I make a positive post about their work? I'm not sure about tagging versus using hashtags for strangers. 2) If I get a piece published that was inspired by or related to a hyper-specific topic that another writer is working with, is it tacky or rude to DM them and say "hey I love your work because we share an interest in X, you might get a kick out this thing I published" (with a link to my piece provided). These questions are asked in the spirit of making connections/community building, so I'm above all else trying to avoid being rude!
» From our in-house social media star : The fact that you are asking both of these questions shows you’re a respectful and self aware person so absolutely go for it, this is the kind of stuff there shoud be more of - it’s how communities and connections form.
Sure there are ways that doing it that could be gauche/annoying - for instance if you spam people and do it constantly or in a way that sounds insincire, but the way that you are planning to approach it is tactful and will likely lead to great outcomes.
And for the first question, I would tag the writer in the slide or write something about why you admire /love what they did in the caption and tag them there (ex: I love the way @benjamindavis swears too much) , so they can immediately understand why they are being tagged.
I have been thinking about this for awhile and wondering if one's work is anthologized and the independent publisher no longer exists and I find it challenging to find places that take already published pieces. Do I have to rewrite all my essays, (nonfiction) and stories all over again? This has been bugging me and I would like them to have more exposure. Or is this just a fantasy in my mind that I might be able to get them out a little further in the world? I hope I am making sense of this and that I am grateful for them having been published in the first place. Do you understand what I am trying to convey? And also a couple of them gutted me in the raly rounds and not sure I can express my words any better now. Thanks so much for all the information we receive from you all.
» If it’s been anthologized, it is considered published whether or not the publisher has now folded. If you’ve edited those pieces further and substantially enough, then there’s a case to be made for resubmitting them as fresh pieces without them having to bear the “previously published” mark. But also, just write new stuff. If you can write amazing stuff that gets published once, you can do it again, and again & again & again.
After about a year of submitting to lit mags, I received my first acceptance (so, yay!), but now I have a question. I have edited one of the poems that got accepted since submitting it, and I like the newer version better. Would it be wrong to see if the lit mag will publish the updated version? Thanks in advance for your insight!
» Definitely feel free to check in with the editor to see if an updated version of the poems can be published. Many times, editors are open to this and might even provide their own edits. Sometimes, editors like the work they have picked as it is and in this case, they’ll tell you so. Just keep the communication open and gentle and you should be all good.
On March 16 I submitted a story called Midsummer Revelry to an English language literary magazine based in Iceland. On May 11 I received an email from the editor saying that my story had been accepted and would be published in the June issue of the magazine. Payment would be 140 euros. On May 15 it was agreed that the money would be paid into my bank account and I was asked to send an invoice including the relevant account details. The invoice was duly sent and the story duly published in the magazine on June 1. More than four months after sending my invoice and despite two friendly reminders, however, I still have not received payment. What should/can I do?
» Ah, that sucks. I’m sorry this is happening. I’d say send them a “Final Notice” to pay you within 30 days or take the story down. Now, if they don't pay you within a month after that, email us and we will update our listings plus let Writers Beware know.
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline.
And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
As always, as an extra thank you to paid subscribers, we’ve included a spreadsheet download at the end.
