Q: I recently received my first "second-tier" rejection note from a lit mag, letting me know they liked my work and suggesting I continue to send more to their magazine. If I do send more to them do I mention this in the cover letter? Is there a tactful way to do that? Or, since it wasn't a personalized note from the editor, do I just take it as nice feedback and move on?
A: That’s awesome! Special rejections are my jam, haha. So I’d say, in your next submission to that lit mag, include a brief, single sentence mentioning the encouraging response, such as "Thank you for your encouraging feedback on my previous submission." Then move directly into introducing your new work or to your bio (whatever your usual cover letter includes).
Q: After publishing work in several lit mags, I've put together a poetry manuscript that I'm almost ready to submit to publishers. Is there a single place online to find a list of small presses looking for poetry manuscripts? Or are you supposed to enter contests for your first book instead? I tend to bristle when I spot entry fees for poets over $5, so probably not interested in places that charge more than that.
A: Emily Stoddard over at The Poetry Bulletin talks a lot about this and compiles an annual list of presses with open reading periods/contests for poetry collections. She’s doing some great work. I will say however that there are rarely fees below $5. In fact, I haven’t seen any.
Q: What exactly does this response mean: "Your story is not a right fit for us but please do submit to us again." I submitted to journals which do not specify a certain theme and their published articles cover a wide range of topics. Is this just a gentler way to reject a submission?
A: These kind of rejections can be a bit tricky to decipher I admit. On the one hand, you want to believe it’s a special or a tiered rejection and the editors really do want to see your work back in their queues. On the other hand, it could well be a more encouraging form rejection. Either way, it is a gentler one for sure, and I think it adds some humanness to the process.
Q: I have a submission that has been through cycles of rejection, and has been subsequently revised in that time. The original version is, however, still with a few publications. The newer version features two sentences that the original submission doesn't have, but both versions of the piece are actually fine and perfectly publication-ready, so I would not be surprised if the old version is currently being considered for publication (or at least a non-form rejection). Would it be acceptable to propose that a publication that accepts the previous version of the piece consider this newer version? Or should I just be cool with them publishing a previous version of the story? Or should I withdraw and formally resubmit?
A: There’s no harm in asking the editors to look at a revised version, especially if the revisions aren’t major. At the end of the day though, if a piece gets an acceptance it is being accepted in its state and on its merit, unless editors specifically ask for changes. So, go with how you feel and what you think about the particular journal accepting it. Sometimes journals will explicitly state they don’t want revisions while others, on the opposite end, will say they pretty much require them. Most though are in the middle.
Q: I'm looking at a literary agency that wants authors to send 10 pages of their book in the body of the email, but the amount of text on 10 pages can vary drastically based on line spacing, font size, etc. Is there an industry expectation for how long those "10 pages" should be? I usually write with rather small font and no spacing, so I'm worried about sending too much.
A: So, the industry standard, more or less, for manuscript formatting is 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. This typically yields about 250 words per page. When an agent requests "10 pages," they're expecting roughly 2,500 words formatted this way.
