Where to Submit This Week (1.13.25)
Ooh, lots of calls for a mid-month list. Probably because nobody wanted to do stuff at the beginning of January so this is basically the beginning of the month.
Speaking of, I’ve heard so many mixed ideas on when you should submit to a magazine in any given reading period.
Some say to submit right in the beginning because you’ll get read with fresh eyes. Then again, this is when loads of folks submit, so you’re one in a giant stack that someone has to look at. And even if it’s marked as a solid story, it will be a while before the second round begins so they might be like, “Hey what was this one about?”
Which brings me to the middle of a period when you might have less submissions to contend with but find yourself coming up against fatigued editors. Then again, your story will likely live in their mind closer to when final decisions get made.
Well then, at decision time should be the best time, right? Eh, probably not because humans procrastinate (esp writers) so editors are getting bombarded then, too! So like, hey, let’s put it to a vote.
When, in a reading period, should you submit to a literary magazine? Comment your reasons why, I’m a huge skeptic so I wanna know
This week, we’ve got:
5 Recently Opened Submission Calls
24 Last Chance to Submit
9 Theme Calls to Inspire You!
69 New Magazines Added to Our Database
5 Lit Mags That Are Always Open for Submissions
5 Contests Closing This Week
And last week, we published:
Submissions Help Line
Q: Is it worth it to shoot your shot at one of those really prestigious, highly competitive lit mags if you’re new to publishing (only been submitting for about a year, have had a few pieces published)? Is there anything to lose?
A: Absolutely worth it with the caveat that we know the shot, like any other shot, is a long shot. Not necessarily because our work isn’t good enough, but mainly because so many others are submitting there at any given time, that it may often come down to a game of chance or already being known enough to stand out in their overflowing overwhelming slush pile. Nothing to lose, at all. I’ve gotten into journals I never thought I would but then you get that sweet sweet acceptance from a “prestigious” place and it’s super satisfying.
Q: When do you give up on submitting a packet or a piece? I have a packet that's been rejected in full over 50 times. What's the most you've ever submitted a piece before acceptance?
A: Keep going till 100 and keep editing along the way. And expand your submission process. As in, submit to mags you wouldn’t usually. Not just the super competitive ones!
Have a question about submitting? Visit our submission helpline, ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
Paid subscriptions are the only way we fund this newsletter. We are 100% human-made and paid. So if you have the means, please consider signing up.
