Definitely felt what you said about a newsletter being less time-intensive than podcasting. That recording and audio editing time all really adds up!
I've been thinking about running a newsletter for a little while and was inspired by yours to give it a go. On reading Philip K Dick in 2024, first post up today:
Very late to the party here, but thank you for this lovely roundup! I was definitely drawn to Substack for how easy it was to navigate, and my little community of chaotic readers is still going strong.
Hello and THANKS! I loved reading this, and your recommendation list is killer good. I write essays and other creative missives about life as a former wanna-be rockstar. My essays chronicle life chasing the dream up and down the Sunset Strip in the 90s, a childhood in the Rocky Mountains, and mid-life back in the Rockies caring for teenagers, aging parents, and a continuing desire to hog the limelight. Subjects are often feminist, queer, funny, and usually not very wholesome. https://camillebrightsmith.substack.com/
Hi! Thanks so much! I have a newsletter chronicling my year in writing. At the end of 2023 I was let go from my job and decided to take all of 2024 to write and work on getting my first book published. I’m working on a memoir about my daughter’s three years of cancer treatment during the pandemic, and I have a section in my newsletter, No Cancer News, where I talk about where we are now and the lasting impact her cancer treatment had on us.
Yes! I love the idea of not waiting for permission. I can write so much more if I'm not hustling to pitch. And I love seeing the ever-growing collection of what I call "my letters" in one place. Have a look! "Divinity School" - kasianikhamina.substack.com
For any of the lit magazines listed here, contact us about doing a recommendation swap on Substack. There is really no reason we shouldn't be supporting each other to grow the market! (editor@afterdinnerconversation.com)
Thank you so much for mentioning our Two Sylvias Weekly Muse. We're an indie press out of Seattle so we appreciate the shoutout! Thank you so much, Courtney!
