Submissions Tip (No Jar)

We have a lot of contest closing this week below, so my personal best tip when subbing to contests is this: Read the previous winners. Seems, obvious, right. So what about when those “previous winners” are just named and you gotta buy a copy of the previous year’s particular issue to actually read them? I mean, by all means do that. But also, you can look up the winners online. See their other work. This’ll give you an idea of their style and what kind of style seems to gel with that particular prize. Ofc, I’ll footnote all this with: contests are quite a bit dependant on chance…something totally out of left field could win, and you’ll never know why. Still, doing this little “research” gives me at least some peace of mind when I fork over my $25 bucks into the void of Submittable.

Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
