And it’s Monday again. Yikes.

We’re going to be making an announcement next Saturday about all sorts of events stuff. But we’re also going to be sending out recordings of past events to folks. So I’ve converted our last workshop, Is Your Work ‘Good Enough’ for Publication? into a purchase/sign-up page. So if you’re a paid subscriber, we can send you the materials and video for free. If not, you can purchase them for $20. Here is where you can do that.

Our next workshop on submitting will be How to Craft Openers That Keep Editors Reading. More details on that will be in our upcoming events announcement, but if you’d like to get a head start, you can learn more and register for it here.

This week, we’ve got:

  • 47 Recently Opened Submission Calls

  • 11 Last Chance to Submit

  • 19 Theme Calls to Inspire You!

  • 14 New Magazines Added to Our Database

  • 5 Lit Mags That Are Always Open for Submissions

  • 2 Contests Closing This Week

And last week, we published:

On Minimalism and Chaotic Energy with Aaron Burch, Editor of HAD

Submissions Help Line

Okay first up, some lovely concerned citizens had this to say about last week’s no-notice Submittable decline issue:

Maybe this particular lit mag is just being rude, but I wanted to give y'all a heads up that Submittable is glitching and people are being rejected without notice by accident. Editors are selecting to send decline letters and they're just not being sent. Submittable has been informed, so has CLMP. Some lit mags (the one I work on included) have posted about this on Bluesky or Threads or wherever and some have tried to notify writers that this is occurring another way, but it's causing a lot of distress for many mags who never want to make their submitters feel unappreciated (corny as that sounds).

Q: Most lit mags accept original, unpublished pieces only. I publish flash fiction pieces on my Substack, but would short stories inspired by those flash be considered original and unpublished if the new works are at least twice as long (say, from 1,000 words to 2,000 or more), even if the main plot, setting, characters remain the same? Is there any kind of consensus about this kind of work adaptation?

A: If you’re writing short stories inspired by your own flash fiction, that’s totally fine and still original.

Q: When I submit multiple poems at a time, I never know what to put in the "Title" part of Submittable. Do I list the titles of every poem (which can get long), or something more generic like, "Poetry Submission" or "Multiple Poems?" Thank you!

A: I used to put things like “5 Poems” but then realized it was super annoying to search through Submittable to quickly see what I subbed where, so now I list all the titles of each piece (unless the mag specifically asks to put something else). I have all my poem titles copied into Google Sheets so I can quickly copy and paste.

Q: What's the deal with expedited submissions? Are they ever worth it, or are they just another publication money grab?

A: Expedited submissions mean editors will review your work before the general queue, which can often be thousands of submissions long. Expedited queues, because they generally have a fee attached to them, might just have 10 or 15 submissions in any given period. Since it takes editors who care about writers time and effort to vet each submission and consider its worth, it’s fair to ask for extra money if some people want to get ahead of that long line. It’s also totally fair for you to say, fuck that, I’ll wait.

In terms of it they’re “worth it”, well that’s an individual thing. Do you have the money? Do you want to get an answer in 3 days or 10 days vs 3 months or, god forbid, 10 months? Should submission queues all be expedited? Well…then we need to figure out a way to pay editors real salaries so they can do their editing full-time. And since that can’t happen (because most editors care about paying writers first), then these kinds of tiered submissions exist. Do know that 99% of the time, just because your submission is expedited, doesn’t mean it gets a higher chance of an acceptance, just a higher chance of a potential acceptance or rejection sooner.

Have a question about submitting? Visit our submission helpline, ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.

Ahem, also! Please note that we do not give specific recommendations through our helpline. They must be general questions about the process, not just “Where do I send my 500-word story about diaper executives who start a cover band called The Doodie Brothers?”

Paid subscriptions are the only way we fund this newsletter. We are 100% human-made and paid. So if you have the means, please consider signing up.

Also, if you’re a paid subscriber you’ll find a downloadable spreadsheet at the bottom of this post with all of today’s opportunities.
