Welcome to Sub Club’s Jobs for Writers!

Not sure why I’m still so stunned by the passage of time at my big age… and yet! I can’t believe that February is officially over. And you know what that means: the pregnant raccoon that lives in the attic of my apartment building is due to give birth sooner rather than later. Seriously. I have a curse where everywhere I live, a pregnant raccoon decides to live in the attic. I’m sure there’s a kind of symbolism there, but unfortunately I can’t be bothered to figure it out. 🤷🏾‍♀️

But enough about me. I want to know about you. This is my official Big Call for our How to Break In series. We want more stories about how people broke into their writing/publishing/academic jobs and gigs. There’s a lot that could be considered a “writing job,” so here are some ideas of what we’d like to see:

  • Essayists, poets, and fiction writers who recently snagged an agent, or a book deal, or have published a chapbook, etc.

  • Literally any role—editorial, sales, marketing, rights, etc.—at major or indie publishers. This includes traditional publishing but also academic and science and whatever else too!

  • Copyeditors! Line editors! Developmental editors!

  • Established humor writers and editors because honestly, we don’t hear about this enough

  • Folks who have recently completed internships, fellowships, and residencies in the writing world

  • Writers, editors, etc. who work in the comic and/or graphic novel space

  • Professors or assistant professors or teaching assistants in creative writing

Also if you’re not exactly on this list, but still think you’ve got something to give, fill out the form anyway. And tell your friends to tell their friends, if you are cool enough to have that many friends.

As always, selected entries will get $50 or a one-year comp.

We’ll list any paid or volunteer opportunity in writing, publishing, and editing. Find details and submit your opening here.
