Submissions Help Line
Q: After a couple of years of publishing a lot of poetry in indie and alt journals, I'm tired of my work only getting read by a handful of people (mostly my fellow writer friends). I want to submit to mags that have the most readers and generally the most cultural currency (pieces going viral, getting reposted and shared all over social media, etc). But I've noticed that the prestigious journals and the ones with lots of followers on X don't necessarily mean more attention. (Partially because several have understandably left X altogether and not yet gained a critical mass of followers on blsky). Where can I find stats of reader count, viral poems, instagram followers, or other metrics that will help me increase my audience?
A: All of this feels like the natural, logical way to think about this stuff, so good on you for that! We list generally up-to-date stats on followers on Chill Subs lit mag profiles, however the best metric for seeing social success is engagement as opposed to followers. A lot of big, prestigious mags have hundreds of thousands of followers but each post might only get like 20 likes. This is not to say that we do poetry for the sake of likes, but hey, that’s the question you asked and I think it’s a genuine one that we all at some point or another think about. Good engagement for IG is around 3-5%. You can calculate that for free on many different tools online, like this one. Another way is just to look over the mag’s profiles and see the vibes you’re getting, and if you really feel there’s a community there. Other than that, well, as with most things in lit mag land (and, really, everywhere), a lot of it’s luck/fate.
Q: I want to participate in more poetry readings this year! I've been invited to two readings from lit journals I was published in, and I loved the experience, but am not sure how to get on the line ups for other events in the future. Is it just about networking with the people who organize them, or is there another route? Is there a master list somewhere of all the lit events/readings in different cities?
A: Ah, I wish we had this and hopefully in the future we will! Till then, I’d say your best bet—outside of waiting for those opportunities to materialize—is to set some up yourself. You’d be surprised how many editors would be elated to welcome a writer-organized reading!
