Now, international magazines. This is a tricky one because ‘international’ can indicate several different things. Here is a breakdown:
Possible interpretations of 'International'
Content: The magazine covers topics or stories from around the world, not just from one specific country. This means it might feature content from a wide range of cultures, perspectives, and experiences.
Audience: The magazine is aimed at, and reaches, readers in many different countries. It's not targeted toward readers in a single, specific country.
Submissions: The magazine accepts submissions from writers or artists all over the world, not just from a single country. This could include translations of works originally published in other languages.
Distribution: The magazine is physically available or sold in multiple countries, or it's available worldwide through online access.
Editors: The editorial staff, contributors, or featured individuals in the magazine could be based in or come from various countries around the world.
While these vary, they often overlap. The important thing to remember, regardless of the focus, is that any connection to ‘international’ is an indication that a magazine has a more global mindset and is not focused solely on a country-centric view of the world.
Just at the top here, I’ll mention one of our personal favorites: Scrawl Place. Andy Brown, the editor has helped Chill Subs out a ton. He consulted with us when we first had the idea to launch a submissions manager. He helped create our AWP scavenger hunt. And he is a great source of knowledge about being an editor in the literary community. I’ve been living abroad for over 10 years and found Scrawl Place even before I started working on Chill Subs. If you live abroad or have unique location-specific experiences at home, they are worth checking out.
NOTE: At Chill Subs we have each magazine’s country listed whenever we could find it. So if you’re looking to write about a specific country, try searching that way. Our community is also quite global and you can sort profiles by country. Use this to find writers around the world who might be able to connect you to local magazines.
*For any poets suffering from writer’s block, we’ve got a one-day workshop coming up this weekend with Najya Williams. All of our workshops come with a free month of Sub Club.
