Submissions Help Line
Q: Hi, I wanted to ask if using AI to proofread poems (ex. scan for metre, look for repeated words, check which lines rhyme) is considered unethical. Moreover, if a magazine says they don't accept work created using AI, do they mean this kind of editing as well, or just auto-generated work? Thanks!
A: Proofreading with a LLM can be helpful and this is most certainly not the same as asking ChatGPT to whip up 5 poems for your next submission cycle to different poetry magazines! However, if a magazine has a strict policy around AI, I’d avoid submitting those to them. At that point, it becomes an ethical question for you to consider. Usually if they are making a point to say “NO AI,” they probably mean they’d like it left out of the whole process. I suppose proofreading is fine but I wouldn’t consider checking for rhythms or repeated words “proofreading.” So yeah, draw the line at basic grammar. Anything after that they’ll likely take issue with.
Q: How is the process for Medium submissions different from regular lit mags. Are there things we should know or consider? How can one discern who is a reliable medium publication, with thoughtful curation, that is worth the time and still active? I know how to do this with regular publications but when I start trying to wade through the medium process I get jammed up very quickly as many medium publications that medium lists as in good standing seem to have either quit publishing for some time or have their guidelines behind a paywall. There are many many publications. Some just seem to post whoever wants to be posted without an eye to curation, (which isn't shade, its just not a match for what I'm looking for right now), while others don't really post creative writing or poetry even if they are listed under that topic. I don't know how to sift through to find the right match and what submission process to use if I do.
A: OK, couple parts to this. So, are there things to know or consider? Yes, the process for submitting on Medium is very different. You need to be added as a writer to submit to a publication on the platform. Different publications have different rules on how to do this so make sure to check their guidelines. Once you are a set writer for a place you can submit much more easily. So, for Medium, the first part is the hump. After that, it’s a few clicks to submit. But pay attention to formatting! Formatting on Medium is weirdly particular and photos must be credited. Just don’t go wild with lots of photos. This is a decent enough guide. So, you want to find the publications that are part of Mediums “Boost Nomination Program”. Those are the mags to target. They will be more likely to get curated and have editors who are invested in your success (because that’s how they get paid). If you’re looking for creative writing focused ones (depending on what genre) that can be tough. But for essays I like Human Parts. For fiction Lit Up is still publishing. They’ve been around a while. Also, maybe Scribe? Their editor is lovely. Haven’t checked in on them in a bit. Medium is much much better for nonfiction / essays.
Q: Hi there! A really good lit magazine just sent me an acceptance for a story I submitted to them. I was very excited about it at first but then read on and realized they only want to publish 5 of the 12 pages. I love this story and would like to see the whole thing published but I also don't want to lose out on this. Do you know if I could still submit the story as a whole elsewhere? Or is that frowned upon or does it infringe on one or the other's rights to the story?
A: You could try and politely probe a bit with the editors — ask them why they think this is the best editorial decision and would they be open to discussion. At the same time, this kind of situation is one where, ultimately, if you don’t agree with the editor’s choice, then you might need to either defer or let go. If you really believe in this story and don’t want to see it chopped up like that, then I’d withdraw it. Or, you can also try and see if maybe the story is more of a longer piece that can in fact be broken up like this. This means that you could publish the other part somewhere else. Many times, stories that are originally published in magazines take very different shapes when they end up in collections (and sometimes even go on to become novels/novellas).
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
