20 Pitch Calls from Paying Publications
Where to Pitch This Week (12.6.24) | Editor requests from This American Life, Condé Nast Traveler, and Guardian US. Plus paid opps in music, politics, and science.
Hello, happy Friday, and welcome to Where to Pitch This Week!
Whether it’s snowing a ton or a chilly 68 degrees (I’m in LA. You’ll see hats, scarves, and mittens when it dips below 72), I hope you’re having a peaceful December. Unless you’re getting a bunch of great writing assignments. In that case, may you be busy as hell.
What Editors Are Looking For
Postive News?
I’m putting a question mark on this, because it’s a prediction, not a guarantee.
I’m guessing January and February will be filled with wild news stories, hot take op-eds, and a lot of stories trying to scare us with worst-case scenarios.
There’ll be pitches galore about bad news. But, editors still like to see positive stories.
That doesn’t mean you need to pitch something about a dog who water skis or a very cute baby wearing a hat. Positive stories don’t have to be fluff.
Your stories could be about hopeful technological advancements, medical discoveries, or people doing good in the world on a big or small scale.
Look for leaders and companies making changes in their community or giving back in unusual ways. That type of positive story often gets attention, and editors like to be sure there’s some kind of good news mixed in with the bad.
Maybe next year will be naturally full of light-hearted stories and joy from all. I suppose anything’s possible. But even if it’s bad news central, try pitching something on the opposite side of the spectrum to stand out.
