So I’ve got a bit of internet-era writing advice I wish someone told me to do sooner. Yeah, like actual advice! I hate advice and usually avoid giving it, but hey— I feel like this is bulletproof obvious for writers.
Huh…now I’m thinking of it, maybe it was so obvious that I’ve been the only one who didn’t know? Fuck, I hope not.
Anyway, here it is. Learn to touch-type. As in, like, type without looking at your keyboard. If that seems disappointingly obvious to you, apologies. I’ve been hen-pecking my whole life and just started learning.
This intro took me 10 minutes to write but i didn’t have to look down once! OK maybe once because I haven’t learned where the dash is yet. But still! This is the first email you’ve received from me where I wasn’t looking down at my keyboard! Isn’t that amazing?
So for me, my doctor told me my sleeping and neck issues were from looking down at my computer so much. That’s why I started this. But I’m so excited to get good enough to start writing stories and poems without getting interrupted by, “OK now where the fuck is that semi-colon!?”
;
Boom. There it is. I just hit that with my pinky. Eyes closed.
Anyway, yeah, it’s been a week and my fingers and forearms really hurt, but I think every writer should know how to do this and wish someone had told me sooner. So, cool cool. Enjoy today’s list. If you are interested in the whole no-look typing nonsense, I’ve been using these two websites. If you know any others, let me know. Or some good hand/wrist stretches? I can’t afford to write this slow for long.
Enjoy. Here are the latest openings (dates in parenthesis are the next deadline).
