Where to submit this week (09.16.24)
146 open submission opportunities (yup, same as amount last week)
Welcome to Sub Club’s Where to submit this week! Our weekly report is of up-to-date submission opportunities for writers. You can also check out our Where to Query this Week report last Wednesday for all things book publishing and agents:
And! We had our first Sub Club Special:
And, as newsletters become a bigger deal (i.e. everyone freaking has one now), we want to make sure you can control what you see from us. So, if you want less or more or nothing, you can manage your subscription here.
And we are toying with a weekly “submissions accountability hour” where we can get together and just submit for a while. An hour, I guess. A casual time to do it because, even having all of the information on submitting, the toughest part is, you know, doing it. So, what do you think?
Also, on Wednesday, I (Ben) will be joining Becky (Lit Mag News), Erik (Submitit Now), Jenn (Journal of the Month), and Lauren (Gettysburg Review / Conjunctions) to talk about why lit mags go defunct. Here are the details:
Why Do Lit Mags Fold?

This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
If the poetry submission guidelines don't state their preference, am I better off putting my name and contact info in my doc or leaving it off? Some places feel very strongly about it one way or the other, but I'm always worried that the mags that are silent on the matter are silent because they think "obviously X is the standard so why bother saying it".
» For poetry, yes, just leave any identifying information off. For prose, I’d be more inclined to go with William Shunn’s formatting as a default.
In the process of making my first poetry manuscript (likely a chapbook, but we’ll see) I’m thinking about how, as my skill and style progress, I might end up not liking a lot (or some) of the pieces in the manuscript. I don’t want to submit/query with a manuscript that I won’t like in 2 years’ time. Do you have any advice on how to make sure the work I include is “correct” for both now and the future or is it a common experience for writers to outgrow their own works? (Keep in mind I am only 17, so I’m bound to develop my style quite a bit in the years to come)
» I understand this feeling. As a poet, this happens to me like every week ha, so yes…a couple year’s can certainly kick that feeling into overdrive. Here are some things that can help:
Accept it: it's very common for writers to outgrow their earlier work. This isn't necessarily negative - it's a sign of your development as a writer.
Focus on present authenticity: Include poems that genuinely represent your current voice and skills. Don't try to predict your future tastes.
Curate carefully: Choose your strongest pieces that you feel confident about now. Quality over quantity.
Consider themed sections: Group poems by theme or style. This can showcase your range and allow future you to still appreciate parts of the collection.
Include recent work: Prioritize your most recent poems, which likely reflect your current styles/abilities best.
Get feedback: Share your manuscript with trusted readers or mentors for objective opinions.
I wrote a book of short stories three years ago that I self-published - it was a finalist in the High Plains Book Awards. Can I submit one of the stories in contests? Or will that count as already been published and ineligible?
» Unless otherwise stated explicitly, self-published is, unfortunately (or fortunately??), considered published.
Hi! So a while ago, I submitted a few pieces to a magazine. Their submission terms said that no response is a rejection - I didn’t receive a response, no sweat, I moved on and kept submitting. Earlier this week I happened to check, and noticed that they had run 2 of my pieces without notifying me. I was mildly annoyed, which became outright frustration when one of the places I’d submitted to in the meantime reached out asking to publish one of those poems. The second magazine was really enthusiastic about the piece, and I think it’s a perfect fit in terms of subject/tone/style. To be honest, I’m pretty miffed that the first magazine ran my work without telling me, or even giving me the opportunity to review & approve formatting (and there are things I would’ve changed regarding format if I’d been given the opportunity). Should I let the poems stay up on the first mag and tell the second mag “no”, or should I contact the first and ask them to take my work down and give the second the go-ahead to publish? I know what I would prefer, but I don’t know how much of a no-no that would be.
» Oh fuck ‘em. Send a note to the first mag and ask for it to be taken down. And then tell the second, OK. If you want to be squeaky-clean polite then tell the second mag what happened first and see if they are OK with it having been up somewhere else for a bit. But yeah, if you got 0 communication before publishing, like, not even an acceptance letter? That’s unprofessional and more of a no-no than pulling a piece. BUT! Check your spam. Just make sure you didn’t miss a communication from them. Basically, if you really want to get the piece in the new magazine, you’ll have to communicate clearly to all parties involved, be polite, and be prepared for the piece to not be published at all if it doesn’t go your way. But then you could resubmit cause I wouldn’t consider that previously published.
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline.
And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
As always, as an extra thank you to paid subscribers, we’ve included a spreadsheet download at the end.

Flashback: Canning Dock Flash Fiction Competition | Deadline: Sep 22
Age categories: under 11, 11 - 17, 18+
Word count: 500 maximum
To get you thinking, writer Phil Olsen has created a series of prompts and writing exercises to help you structure your short story.
Choose one of the four prompts below as inspiration for your 500-word story. You can simply use a prompt as a jumping-off point to get started, or you can delve deeper into the history of the Canning Graving Docks.
The accompanying writing exercises are completely optional - feel free to mix them up and try them out with any of the prompts. The final flash fiction piece that you submit does not have to incorporate the exercises, it just needs to respond to one of the four prompts.
Fee: FREE | Awarding: Prizes will include NML membership for a year, a book bundle from Writing on the Wall and a voucher to spend at NML shops and cafes. | Judge(s): Editors
The Rising Poety Prize | Deadline: Sep 23
For this prize, we are only accepting unpublished work from new and emerging poets: poets without a full-length collection published at the time of submission. Poets with no publication history are especially encouraged to submit. Poets with only chapbooks published are also eligible. Poets with self-published full-length collections, however, are ineligible.
Submissions are open internationally, to any poet writing in English—inclusion of other languages is welcome, as long as the poem is largely written in English.
DO NOT INCLUDE your name or identifying information in the document OR submission title box.
We are only accepting unpublished work. If your poem has been published elsewhere, even on a blog or on social media, it is not eligible.
We accept simultaneous submissions—just please send us a note if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere.
Your submission must be no more than three poems and under ten pages. Please submit all your poems in ONE document. Please begin each poem on a new page and include each poem's individual title.
Fee: $20 | Awarding: $3000 | Judge(s): Morgan Parker
