This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Hi! One of my pieces is shortlisted in a contest. The journal isn't publishing the piece, but will announce the shortlisted writers and the story titles. I've submitted the same short story to two other competitions. Should I withdraw my piece from those places since the other journal is publishing their shortlist? Is it poor form to keep the story in the other two competitions? What if the piece is shortlisted in one of the other competitions or wins? Will that look bad that I've submitted it to several places?
» If you want to be published as a shortlisted writer in this mag, then yes — withdraw the piece. If you want to take a chance at one of the other mags, then let this mag who has shortlisted your work know so and withdraw it from their shortlist.
EDIT: Whoops, read this a bit wrong. Okay, so the place where you’re shortlisted isn’t publishing shortlists. Well, in this case you don’t really have issue. No need to withdraw from other places. :)
How do we know if our pieces match a publication's vibe? Or, what things indicate the scene our work belongs in? Or, what are some measurable ways to determine fit? I feel like I'm doing pretty good research on choosing mags (reading their prior publications, thoroughly reviewing their calls for submissions, vibing with their social media presence, etc) but I'm consistently getting rejections where the feedback says "it's not quite what we're looking for." I know my writing is high-quality stuff, but I just cannot find a home for it.
» That’s a pretty standard line (“it’s not quite what we’re looking for”), so I wouldn’t put too much extra credence/thought into it than any other line from standard rejection letters. So much of getting accepted is random and that’s probably a bit of an annoying answer…but…well, that’s indie lit. Main thing is, keep doing what you’re doing and just start submitting more. You’ll hit the mark soon enough.
I've seen a lot of lit mags on submittable asking for tips. Some of these mags will be listed as free to submit to, but you can't submit without tipping--this feels slimy to me. My question is, what is expected of me, as a submitter, when it comes to tipping? As someone who has worked in food service, I understand that individuals rely on tips for their income, and I usually tip whenever I have the opportunity. I guess, because it's a journal, not a person, asking for a tip, it somehow seems different to me. Am I a bad person if I don't tip a lit journal?
» Yeah, if there’s ONLY a Tip Jar AND they are listed as “free to submit” then it’s icky. Some mag editors may not be aware of this though (we gotta give people the benefit of the doubt in this biz). For what it’s worth, dear editors, keeping a MANDATORY tip jar is not, well, a tip jar. It is…a submission fee. Just own up and move on, or keep a free option alongside the tip jar if you really like the sound of that…tip jar…tip tip tip.
Hello and thanks for all the helpful information. I have submitted some poems to a few journals as simultaneous submissions. I recently learned there are journals that accept audio recordings, and I'd like to submit some audio recordings of the same poems that I've submitted elsewhere. These recordings are not just me reading the poetry aloud, but performing it in a more experimental, musical way with guitar accompaniment. Do I need to treat these audio recordings as simultaneous submissions with the written poems, or do these audio recordings count as completely separate works?
» This depends on what the mag says. If they don’t make a distinction in terms of previously published or not (between written vs audio poems), then I’d say safe to submit. Of course, the other mags who accept only written subs may take issue with an audio recording in other pubs but…that’s…like…don’t do that editors, no one fucking cares if it’s previously pubbed anymore. Ahem, sorry, did I mention so much of this is IMO. ;)
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline.
As always, as an extra thank you to paid subscribers, we’ve included a spreadsheet download at the end.
