Welcome to Sub Club’s Where to submit this week! Our weekly report of up to date submission opportunities for writers. This week, we’ve got:

  • 6 Recently Opened Submission Calls

  • 3 Lit mags closing for submissions this week

  • 5 Theme Calls

  • 6 New Friends (new listings we’ve added to our database)

  • 5 Contests That Probably Won’t Scam You

  • And a Partridge in a Pear Tree

It’s interesting the patterns you notice making these lists of opportunities over the past year. Lists with closing dates on the 15th or 31st are always HUGE, but in these third weeks, it’s a lot less. What gives? What did the numbers 16-29 ever do to you?

The good news is that limited lists give you more time to explore these limited options and Shannan more time to breathe, eat, and spend time with her loved ones. Everybody wins!

In case you missed it, last week we had a couple extra lists:

Contests That Probably Won’t Scam You

Willow Springs Surrealist Poetry Prize | Deadline: September 1

Submit a packet of up to 3 poems in one file.

Please do not include identifying information in your submission document. We will use your Submittable information to contact you, so please make sure your contact information is accurate and up to date.

Multiple submissions are welcome, as are simultaneous submissions. Please notify us immediately if your submission is accepted elsewhere.

We accept only previously unpublished work for publication. Winners receive $1000 and publication in our Spring issue.

We may consider any submission for general publication

Fee: $15 | Awarding: $500 | Judge: Melissa Kwasny

Noteworthy: Willow Springs is a deeply reputed and longstanding lit mag. The idea of a “surrealist” poetry prize is also just extra thrilling. You can read last year’s winner here.

Poetry London Pamphlet Prize | Deadline: May 31

Please only submit 24 pages of poetry.

All files must be either a .doc, .docx or .pdf. All entries will be judged anonymously and the poet’s name must not appear on any page. Entries must be written in English, can be on any subject and can be written in any style or form. Entries are welcome from poets based anywhere in the world and there are no restrictions on themes, subjects or styles.

Fee: £20 | Awarding:The winner will receive £250, publication of their pamphlet with Poetry London Editions and ten author copies of the work. The winner will also be invited to launch their pamphlet at Poetry London’s Autumn 2024 Readings at the Southbank Centre as part of the London Literature Festival in October. | Judge: Nicole Sealey, Dan O'Brien.

Noteworthy: Poetry London Magazine, a highly respected and longstanding international lit mag, is now looking to promote poets even further with its new book publishing imprint called Poetry London Editions.

The Orison Chapbook Prize | Deadline: July 1

Each year from April 1 – July 1 we accept submissions of chapbook manuscripts (20 – 45 pp.) in any genre (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, or hybrid) for The Orison Chapbook Prize, judged by Orison Books founder and editor, Luke Hankins.

  • Do not include your name anywhere in your manuscript file or file name, but only in your biographical note and cover letter.

  • Please include an acknowledgments page in your manuscript listing any periodicals where individual pieces from your manuscript first appeared.

  • Original English work only; no translations.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted; please notify us immediately should a manuscript be accepted for publication elsewhere.

We plan to announce the winner and finalists by October 15.

Fee: $15 | Awarding: $300 + 20 copies | Judge: Luke Hankins

Noteworthy: The Orison also published the annual Best Spiritual Literature anthology. I like that there’s a specific focus on “spiritual” works here, as vague as that might feel it’s still pretty cool and unique.

The Auburn Witness Poetry Prize | Deadline: June 2

Each entrant may submit up to three poems of witness.

Please enter your personal information into the required fields and include a brief cover letter with your submissions, but do not include any personal information (name, mailing address, email, etc.) on your poems. All entries will be screened by SHR editors before being sent to a final judge. Submissions will be read blind after they are passed to the final judge. The final judge will select a first-place winner and any runners-up. SHR editors will select finalists. Results will be announced in early August, if not sooner.

Entries must be previously unpublished. We accept simultaneous submissions but ask that you please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. You may withdraw your submission at any time via Submittable.

Fee: $15 | Awarding: $1000 | Judge(s): Victoria Chang

Noteworthy: Besides the fact that Chang is judging this year, I have a personal soft spot for this award because well, erm, I was the runner-up last year when it was judged by Joy Harjo. The editors are super friendly and transparent, and the Southern Humanities Review is a great lit mag to be published in!

The Black River Chapbook Competition | Deadline: May 31

Twice each year Black Lawrence Press will run the Black River Chapbook Competition for an unpublished chapbook of poems or prose between 16-36 pages in length. The contest is open to new, emerging, and established writers. The winner will receive book publication, a $500 cash award, and ten copies of the book. Prizes are awarded on publication.

Fee: $18 | Awarding: $500 | Judge(s): Editors

Noteworthy: Black Lawrence Press is a wonderful indie press that comes out with some great work every year. I especially love chapbook prizes because, well, it’s hard to publish chapbooks outside of them and they can be more accessible money and selection wise.
