Where to pitch this week (09.13.24)
Editor requests from Metro, Business Insider, Hyphen, and a chance to write a hot take about cold golf.
Hello and happy Friday!
May your weekend be full of relaxation and/or editors giving you money to write. The last part may not happen on the weekend, but you never know.
What Editors Are Looking For
Election! Election! Election!
Editors are obviously covering more than the upcoming American election, but it’s going to be at the top of everyone’s mind ‘til November.
That doesn’t mean you need to pitch election news, but use the election for inspiration. If you have a personal essay that relates to one of the candidate’s talking points, it’s a good time to pitch that story. For example, if you used to eat cats and dogs, an editor would probably be interested. The story itself would have nothing to do with the candidates but the “they’re eating cats and dogs” line would give your story a hook.
Now, that particular pitch won’t happen because that cats and dogs story is 100% fake. But it’s an example of a way to use election headlines to pitch a non-election story.
Awareness Days
If you’d like to steer clear of the election (and who could blame you), October has a few awareness days that could help a pitch.
These are always a mixed bag. Sometimes editors love planning coverage around things like “World Mental Health Day.” Other times, they don’t care. But if you have an idea that fits, it’s worth a try!
