Breaking into any industry is tough. Breaking into indie lit as a new literary magazine is comically so. You’re entering a space with over 3000 other magazines with no money, no social media presence, and looking to curate what is ostensibly homework.
And yet, year after year, people do. Year after year, many of them go defunct. As writers, we’ve seen this cycle happen over and over. So as this year comes to a close, we want to use our reach to remind everyone about all of those brave editors who saw the barren impoverished landscape of indie lit in 2023 and thought, fuck it.
This isn’t only for them. Writers can benefit a lot from exploring new magazines. Competition is high and everyone starts somewhere. If you can identify the magazines who are off to a great start, you might snag a publication credit that will be highly sought after down the road. Also, being small passion projects, many of these editors will sing your praises in a way more established magazines may not.
Everyone has their preferences and vibes they look for when judging a new magazine. Here are mine.
They have a solid aesthetic - For new magazines, I like to see that they’ve thought through their designs a bit. Nothing fancy, but having a recognizable look and feel matters to me. Basic blog-post looking websites with any old colors and stock photos tend to get lost in the mix.
They must have a masthead - I am sure there are folks who have their reasons for not including a masthead. To me though, it shows a lack of commitment. A masthead means accountability. Especially if there is a fee. If there is a submission fee with no masthead, hell no. But in general, I want to know who the human is that is reading my work.
Diverse publishing habits - There are so many voices in the world that have not been heard because writing for pleasure has been a pretty privileged pursuit (and still is in many ways). So many magazines are coming out that are actively trying to make this a thing of the past, some with the express goal of doing so. As someone who thinks this is the future, those folks get my vote.
Community engagement - I am of the mindset that the internet is becoming more and more interested in niche communities. The days of viral attention and twitter fame are on the out. And really, with a few thousand really dedicated fans, any community can thrive. So when I see really engaged editors building a community around their magazine, I want to be a part of it.
Quality writing with editorial standards - I am not a craft happy person. A lot of writers are, but it’s not what draws me to a story or poem, really. And I can’t pretend I am someone who reads something and can tell you if it meets quality standards with craft. But when there are lots of typos, spelling errors, misused words, it pulls me out of whatever I am reading. And it shows me the editors aren’t giving the piece attention before it gets published. So, eh, that kinda tells me they’ll not be as attentive to their magazine either.
Clear guidelines - I simply won’t bother submitting to a magazine that says, “Follow us on XYZ” to hear about reading windows. This might be because I’m old and tired of social media and I am never on it except for work. So even if I follow people, I’ll never see their call because I only open the app to “like” Chill Subs stuff then throw my phone across the room. So, eh. Yeah, I think clear guidelines, with set reading periods is important to me. Also then I’m not sitting around wondering, “Did they go defunct? Are they on hiatus? What is going on!”
I am sure there are many other factors you might consider when reviewing a new magazine. For me, these factors tend to be what sets up a magazine for success and fit my goals. What else? Hm, I think paying writers is nice, but not everyone starting out can afford it. I love to see print right off the bat, but again, money. What do you look for? Let me know below.
If you find any of these magazines to your liking, make a special effort to promote them and let them know you appreciate what they are doing. It will mean a lot to those who’ve started them, I promise.

Thank you, Benjamin, for including Witcraft in this list. Your support has been crucial to our growing reach.
Things I look for - I prefer to not have to pay to submit a story. While I get that they have to 'keep the lights on', and $3 here and there is fine, but when I'm submitting to ten or more places, that adds up quick.
I also pay attention to word count....as I'm sure I'm not the only one who submitted a story and whoops, didn't pay attention to that! I poke around a website, to get the vibes, then I'll read what they are looking for. Also how easy is a magazines website to navigate. If I have to dig for the submissions page, you've lost me.
