Quick! Send Us the First Two Pages of Your Story So We Can Critique It Live
Because it's actually fun to tear our work to shreds and piece it back together, better!
We’re launching a new event series, friends!
This month, we’re kicking off Live Feedback Clinics, where professional editors and writers offer honest, constructive feedback on real submissions by YOU!
Each clinic will focus on a specific type of writing: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc. The goal is to show what it takes to transform a piece from promising draft to something that stands out in a submissions queue, boosting your chance of publication.
Our first Live Feedback Clinic will center on short stories, in particular the opening pages of a short story. Openings are important for every single type of writing out there, and what an editor sees—or doesn’t see—in those first couple of pages often determines whether they keep reading.
Paid subscribers can submit the first two pages of a previously unpublished short story to be considered (cap: 50 submissions). Janelle will choose three entries to read aloud and give live feedback on—covering voice, clarity, momentum, and how the opening sets up (or undercuts) the full piece.
Whether or not your story is selected, you’ll come away with a sharper sense of what makes an opening work and how that carries through the entire story.
Join us on Thursday, July 31, 8–9 PM ET. Both free and paid subscribers can attend this live event for free, but submissions and recording access are exclusive to paid subscribers.
