Okay so for the past, like, three months I keep meaning to tell you all about our little experimental lit mag on Instagram and Threads. Every week I think of it, then forget. So, today is the day! Woooohoo.

So on the day Threads launched, we launched Thread Lit Mag for fun. We wanted to experiment with an alternate form of submissions through social media. Folks submit by tagging @threadlitmag. If we “like” it with a heart it’s a rejection. And if we repost it, it’s an acceptance. We kinda thought Threads was gonna be the alternative everyone flocked to when Twitter shit the bed. Alas, right idea, wrong platform.

Well, now Thread Lit Mag is on both Threads and Instagram with a little over 4,000 readers (and you can submit via Instagram DMs now). Pay is $85 and all submissions must be under 500 characters so that’s like, almost a dollar a word in most cases. We have two editors running it, they’re doing a badass job, and they’re taking submissions for their next issue now through either platform.

Here is the latest call. Deadline is March 15th.

Submissions Help Line

Q: What should a cover letter for a short story submission consist of? I have been giving my contact information, contest results, recent publications, and a brief sentence about myself—usually college degree, a hobby, and a political activity. I welcome any feedback on what else to include or what to exclude—and how many publications to include: three, five, twenty-five? Also, providing a sample cover letter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A: Like with any cover letter, you’ll never really miss keeping things brief and professional, but if you want to explore a ridiculously detailed cover letter deep-dive try this:

Q: I recently had a submission declined through Submittable with no message. I only happened to see it was declined when checking something else. Would it be a bad idea to reach out and ask if that's their standard procedure? I've never had a journal not send a "thanks but no thanks" note before.

A: Some magazines unfortunately don’t respond at all and this is the way you might find out. Unfortunately, if you submit widely enough, you’ll encounter this. Not often and not really the norm, but it exists. So, I’d leave it.

Have a question about submitting? Visit our submission helpline, ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.

Ahem, also! Please note that we do not give specific recommendations through our helpline. They must be general questions about the process, not just “Where do I send my 500-word story about diaper executives who start a cover band called The Doodie Brothers?”

Paid subscriptions are the only way we fund this newsletter. We are 100% human-made and paid. So if you have the means, please consider signing up.

Also, if you’re a paid subscriber you’ll find a downloadable spreadsheet at the bottom of this post with all of today’s opportunities.
