After a brief check-in, we’ll will take a few minutes to share new resources and journals to make the submission process easier. Our one cent: I’ve seen a bunch of people talking about this lit mag in the comments/chat/around our socials/Substack and clearly for good reason. They’ve got a gothic/Romantic aesthetic and present the beautiful work they print gorgeously. If you’ve got some dark horror love poems hanging out in your notes app, send them in before Halloween eve!

Our one cent: Since All Halllows Eve is indeed just around the corner, of course all that is spooky and weird is on my radar. To enter HAUNTER is to feel like you’re being whisked into another darkly pleasing realm. I love when mags put this level of effort into their landing pages. It immediately gets me into the experience they’re trying to share!

Our one cent: A lovely Substack based lit mag that has a homepage not on Substack, which I haven’t seen before, but I do think it’s pretty smart. For better or for worse, Substack doesn’t really allow you to modify your homepage much so this mag’s taken matters into their owns, so to speak. I also love their design!

Our one cent: A solid lit mag running for several decades now, they consistently have excellent print issues. They’re based in Indiana University’s English Department, run primarily by the grad students. And work published here has also won the Pushcart multiple times.

Our one cent: A brand new lit mag that I’m super excited to learn about explore and wish nothing but the best of the best for. They have a unique design and have clearly through their ethos which you can read about here. The editors have done all the design themselves which is just amazing. Oh and they too are building a community on Substack. If you’ve got work that deals with “survival, resistance, and healing” then consider sending it in here.

Our one cent: One of the prettiest, simplest, cleanest, prestigious-est lit mags out there. I love that you can read everything online. Do note that they have submission caps, so you might notice that at this point they’re Poetry and Fiction caps are filled but you can still send in Translations and Nonfiction.

Our one cent: An extension of the Michigan Quarterly Review, MQR Mixtape is their exclusively online literary space for work that extends beyond all that print might be able to contain (think: recorded conversations, short films, plays, meditations, etc). I love when already established mags do cool experiments like this—what else is the lit mag world for! Their current issue is inspired by the Sufi mystic and poet Hayyuna and will be edited by Noor Al-Samarrai.
Hinterland → Deadline: Oct 31 | Fee: £3 | Pay: £25-£100 flat | Open for Fiction, Nonfiction | ☑︎ Sim Subs | ✖️ Reprints | R: 120 days | 3K+ followers | United Kingdom | 2019 — “A new quarterly, print and digital magazine, based out of the University of East Anglia, dedicated to creative nonfiction.”
Our one cent: Devoted to creative non-fiction, this beautiful lit mag wants work between 500-5000 words on virtually any topic in any genre so long as it can fall “somewhere in the realm of nonfiction writing.” This is also a great place for your personal essay and memoir pieces, so if you’ve got some you’re ready to send out into the world, now’s the time to feel brave!
Banshee → Deadline: Oct 31 | Fee: No | Pay: €50-€250/piece | Open for Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry | ☑︎ Sim Subs | ✖️ Reprints | R: 80 days | A: 1.40% | 15K+ followers | Ireland | 2015 — “A small independent Irish publisher established in 2014. We publish a print literary journal, Banshee, as well as a select list of books. We love exciting, accessible, contemporary writing in all forms.”
Our one cent: I’ve published here a few times now and so has my husband, Karan, and each time we feel giddy about an acceptance for them. The editors are so sweet, their print and website is professionally laid out, and they pay promptly! I’m rooting for this lit mag to keep growing and I’d love for even more people to know about them so it felt right to highlight them here. Note that even though they’re an Irish publisher, they welcome submissions from all over the world!
