Both a poet’s poet and a people’s poet, Chen Chen is hugely popular across social media, the “literati”, and anywhere there are poetry books in any shape or form. He first exploded onto the scene with his phenomenal Boa Editions published collection When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities (2017) and by the time his second collection Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced an Emergency (Boa Editions, 2022) came out he had won and was continuing to win awards left, right and center while pushing the boundaries of poetry.

My favorite thing about Chen’s work is that it’s fun, accessible, and still alarmingly poignant and relevant. He isn’t afraid to write about sex in all its messy deliciousness. He isn’t afraid to be sad and wild and frivolous and yet, full of method and logic.

When I asked him for a list of mags that first published him when he was starting out, he was very happy to avail and alongside this list, mentioned “I remain grateful to the editors of these magazines for taking a chance on me back then!”

Moral of the story? Connect with editors, submit to all the lit mags, take your chance so a chance can be taken on you. Oh and keep writing and getting better. Easy, right? Yep, easy-peezy lemon-squeezy. Okay, now let’s get submittin’!
