Another one of those mid-month slumps. Why doesn’t anyone want to open for submissions in mid-March, huh? Probably out enjoying the weather.

Not much news today. Got some events coming up that you can register for here.

And we’ve got an open accountability hour tomorrow at 10 AM. Just some time set aside to submit with friends. Ask questions, do your thing.

Here is where you can register for that: → Register ←

I’m still learning all this events mumbo-jumbo. Anyone ever managed lots of events before that knows a good system? We’re kinda straddled between Tally, Zoom, Google Sheets, and so on. If you’ve got some advice for me, it’d be very welcome. Just shoot me an email ben@chillsubs.com

Cool cool, on to opportunities.

This week, we’ve got:

  • 2 Recently Opened Submission Calls

  • 25 Last Chance to Submit

  • 10 Theme Calls to Inspire You!

  • 20 New Magazines Added to Our Database

Submissions Help Line

Q: Am I in the wrong? I sent a poem quite some time ago for submission to an online anthology. The poem was accepted, but during the time between submission and acceptance, I workshopped the poem and made several revisions. I contacted the journal and asked them if they would be open to the new version. I sent it twice, actually, and was open to a yes or a no of the revised version. I never received a response from them. Now, they have set up a release date for the anthology, but still have not responded to me. I don't feel comfortable having this poem included because of their lack of response. I also did revisions, and I like the new version better. I don't want to be a jerk, but I feel like I want to protect myself and my work and that I at least deserved communication from their end. Am I wrong to ask them to withdraw it? Thanks!

A: You’re totally not in the wrong to want to withdraw it over bad communication UNLESS they made you sign some sort of contract (or there was an email agreement or such in this vein) that they don’t accept revisions and you’ve already signed over first-print rights. Sometimes editors can be quite busy, especially close to print runs or releases, but still, responding to contributors is something that should be done. Maybe try one more time and express your concerns sincerely? And perhaps put “URGENT” in the subject line?

Have a question about submitting? Visit our submission helpline, ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.

Ahem, also! Please note that we do not give specific recommendations through our helpline. They must be general questions about the process, not just “Where do I send my 500-word story about diaper executives who start a cover band called The Doodie Brothers?”

Paid subscriptions are the only way we fund this newsletter. We are 100% human-made and paid. So if you have the means, please consider signing up.

Also, if you’re a paid subscriber you’ll find a downloadable spreadsheet at the bottom of this post with all of today’s opportunities.
