Where to Submit This Week (4.21.25)
Hey friends!
Super happy to share that today, we have SmokeLong Quarterly Editor-in-Chief Christopher Allen with us. Below, he offers a peek into SmokeLong’s editorial process.
Don’t forget to register for his free webinar this Saturday on the best practices for submitting to SmokeLong. More details below! But first, here’s Christopher.
SmokeLong Quarterly: The Editorial Process
SmokeLong’s editorial process has evolved over the last 22 years.
In the past, we had a weekly guest editor, which sometimes worked really well and sometimes didn’t. At the end of any given week, we’d have anywhere from 50 to 150 submissions. The pool of stories was often too small to include a stellar piece of flash.
But that was then. Now, in 2025, we receive an average of 1,000 submissions each month. Our editorial process has changed to accommodate this inundation of flash.
And we’re still changing.
At the moment, we have 20 submissions editors paired to read around 15 submissions each week. These talented writers are fast, thoughtful, and experienced flash readers. If even one of them votes MAYBE on a submission, I have a look and decide if the senior editors should respond. This will almost always happen with a seven-day turnaround.
Once a submission goes to the senior editors, there will be eight editors discussing the work, so this will take a bit longer. If your work has been in our queue for longer than seven days, you can rest assured that we are discussing it. Our discussions almost always result in a tiered rejection—more about this below.
Our editorial process is anonymous, and we know there are pros and cons to this concept. Our submissions editors and most of our senior editors have no access to cover letters or the messaging feature in Submittable. Shasta Grant—our Senior Coordinating Editor—and I have access to the cover letters because we must do some final research before we accept a submission. Generally, we do not read cover letters unless we need to format them for publication, so please don’t waste energy on formulating a cover letter beyond a third-person print-ready bio.
If we are considering a narrative for publication but have substantive edits, we’ll ask the writer if they’d like to see our edits prior to an offer of publication. And we’ll send edits only if it becomes clear in our discussion of the submission what edits will improve the story. If our editors can’t reach a consensus, we’ll send a tiered rejection. Only once we’ve agreed on a final draft will we send an acceptance. If we have only cosmetic edits, we’ll usually accept with the note that we might suggest some very minor changes.
For each reading period we have, approximately, a six-week fee-free submission period and a six-week period when there is a small submission fee. This new submission model will begin in May 2025 after we are finished reading for the SmokeLong Quarterly Award for Flash Fiction. Our first themed call for submissions begins May 11: Dark Fantasy and Psychological Thriller. Accepted stories will receive $300 and a nomination for the Shirley Jackson Award.
We send page proofs a few days before publication for both interview and narrative.
We pay $100 or $150 with audio shortly after publication.
If you’re interested in learning more, Christopher Allen is teaching Submitting to SmokeLong: Better Practices at 12 PM PT on April 26th:
In this webinar, you'll learn what turns our submissions editors on and off. Of course your work is centerstage, but we all want to put our better foot forward when submitting work we love. We're always rooting for you.
And it’s free! Register below.
This week, we’ve got:
4 Recently Opened Submission Calls
10 Last Chance to Submit
12 Theme Calls to Inspire You!
8 New Magazines Added to Our Database
10 Lit Mags That Are Always Open for Submissions
1 Contest Closing This Week
And last week, we published:
Submissions Help Line
Q: If an extract (say, the first page) of a story is published on the website of a national writing competition, does this count as previously published, thereby dooming it to never being published in full? Thank you.
A: Not at all, submit and publish freely!
Q: Hey—if a magazine that published a piece of mine has since gone defunct, can I resubmit those stories to other mags?
A: If the piece can no longer be found online or in print, then I’d submit it. Just add a note in the cover letter about this.
Have a question about submitting? Visit our submission helpline, ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. And if you are a paid subscriber, you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
Ahem, also! Please note that we do not give specific recommendations through our helpline. They must be general questions about the process, not just “Where do I send my 500-word story about diaper executives who start a cover band called The Doodie Brothers?”
Paid subscriptions are the only way we fund this newsletter. We are 100% human-made and paid. So if you have the means, please consider signing up.
Also, if you’re a paid subscriber you’ll find a downloadable spreadsheet at the bottom of this post with all of today’s opportunities.
