Or our Where to Pitch This Week from last Friday WITH The Kitchn, The Londoner, Afar, Business Insider, Time Out, and a chance to write about niche Miami Vice trivia.
We’ve got more submission accountability hours (i.e. fuck it, submit parties) coming! Oof turns out Monday at 9:00 AM is not the ideal time. So our next one will be:
(Thursday) November 7th at 12:00 PM EST » REGISTER HERE
Come with any questions you have about submitting. I’m happy to answer anything I can. These are super casual. Time to submit your work with a bit of support.
I’m going to have to take a little break for the next week since we will be away. So that will be your last chance for a bit. But will be back in the third week of Nov.
This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Q: If I submit a piece and it is rejected, but later do an overhaul and make material changes, is it completely uncouth to resend it?
Ben: Honestly, depends. If it is years later, why not. If it is months later? Nah. I mean, I don’t think it’s worth it either way. There are plenty of lit mags out there. Not worth the risk. But if you’re super sure it’s meant for this mag, OK. But wait…years. And only with a mag with a big team so it’s unlikely you get the same reader. And change the title. Yeah, this is really not worth it.
Q: Do most people craft their submissions with a certain mag in mind? Most publications have specific requirements (naturally) but also a vibe they really go after, so I tend to feel a bit hesitant when submitting a pre-existing work that feels like a fit, but wasn't created specifically to fit with that magazine. As a result, many of my own recent submissions have been written with specific mags (or a select few) but I worry that maybe I'm way off base by doing this.
Ben: Most writers do NOT craft work to a specific mag. But for a select few? Yeah that’s more common. But if pre-existing work feels like a fit then nothing should stop you from submitting it. Write the story or poem you want to write then find the magazine who loves that sort of work. Doing it the other way around kinda takes the joy out of it, I think. That said, I do know of some writers who’ve done it with some success. Usually with a lot of time and study.
Q: An online magazine accepted a short fiction piece of mine over a month ago. The editor said she'd publish it in three or four weeks. It's still not published, and she is not responding to my emails. At the time she accepted it I of course withdrew it from the journals I'd submitted to... now I'm wondering if that was a mistake. Is it normal for editors to ghost their writers in the period between acceptance and publication? I've sent her a whopping total of three emails, so I'm not barraging her, and only the last email asked about the pub. date. The other two contained info the editor requested.
Ben: Hm, it’s not normal for an editor to ignore a writer they plan to publish. But sometimes emails are used for specific purposes at a mag so it might be that your communications are not being seen. I’d need more details. But sometimes once a submission is finalized, any reply could just be going unread. Have you tried emailing the editor in a new email through their contact? I’d also check the website to see if they are still publishing. If work is being posted and the mag is active, it likely means yours is in queue and just delayed a bit. Withdrawing from others is the right thing to do, though. Give it another few weeks and if there is no word, feel free to send us an email with the specifics and we can check out this magazine for you.
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
