So it looks like people are pretty into submissions/publishing education! Awesome!

Do people still say awesome? I feel like it was always kinda lame, but can't shake it. Hold on, maybe this generation has come up with something better. I'll google it.

.......no.

No, we're sticking with awesome. That's right, we're getting more into live events. Here is what's coming up:

Free

Awesome Chill Subs Tutorial: Come learn all about how to find the best lit mag for your work through Chill Subs on Thursday, February 13th at 11 AM EST.

» Link «

Awesome Submissions Accountability Hour: Come hang out and submit with us, and ask questions, and chill, you know. It'll be a gas—OK, wait, no, isn't "Gas" in this context like a thing from the 1930s? Like "Gee, wiz Jimbo, what a gas!" I'm not losing it right? Someone Gen Z or Gen ... H? J? Idk when the '30s were. Anyway, someone help me out here.

Anyway! Our next submissions accountability hour will be Wednesday, February 19th at 12PM EST.

Submissions Help Line

Q: Do you have any advice on how to do a cover letter for a nontraditionally structured novel? The usual advice is to set out the plot beats and main characters. But if it is non-linear or multiple intertwining stories with lots of characters featuring for a short, how is the best way to present that?

A: If your novel is non-linear or features multiple intertwining stories, focus on the core themes, narrative approach, and what ties the different elements together. Instead of a strict plot summary, briefly explain the structure (e.g., “This novel unfolds through interwoven perspectives across different timelines”) and highlight the emotional or conceptual throughline. If space allows, mention a few key characters and their arcs but keep it concise.

Q: How do interviews work? Do you have to be well-established to get to interview someone (and this is likely a “yes” for being interviewed yourself)? Do you just ask to interview people? I’ve been curious about this because I’d like to submit an interview but frankly have no idea how it works.

A: You don’t need to be well-established to conduct an interview—just be professional, prepared, and polite. (These three P’s have usually always helped me out, ha). Many writers and artists are open to being interviewed, especially if your pitch is thoughtful and relevant to their work. Reach out via email or social media with a clear, concise request explaining who you are, why you’d like to interview them, and where you intend to submit the piece. Being interviewed yourself often depends on your publication history and visibility, but small lit mags do feature emerging writers.

Q: In practice, when the guidelines ask for a cover letter (and don't give guidance about a salutation), I generally use "Dear Editors." If the guidelines do *not* explicitly ask for a cover letter, I include my usual "Thank you for considering" block, but without a salutation. Is this a reasonable compromise, or is there a better way?

A: Yes! “Dear Editors” is a solid default if no specific names are provided. If a cover letter isn’t explicitly required, your approach—keeping the thank-you block but omitting a salutation—is perfectly reasonable. If you want a slight alternative, you could open with a simple “Hello” or just jump straight into the note. I sometimes add “Dear Editors & Readers” when I know for a fact the mag has readers.

Q: Hi! You are awesome humans doing an awesome job helping us writers get our writing out. On the subject of out, many journals now say that they encourage submissions from traditionally underrepresented/marginalized people. I qualify in a few categories, but always feel pretty cheesy announcing this in the cover letter. Additionally, my fictional stories don't regularly feature queer characters suffering from depression and addiction, for example, so it feels doubly strange. Question for you, awesome humans: what is the tactful way of communicating this information to diversity-oriented journals? Many thanks for all your Sub Club work, and your time in considering my question.

A: I feel you on this one. The way I see it, we aren’t required to disclose of course, but if you choose to, keep it brief and natural. A simple line in your bio or closing can work: “As a writer from [underrepresented identity], I appreciate journals that prioritize diverse voices.” You don’t need to tie it to your fiction’s themes: your work stands on its own. If the journal has a submission form, check whether there’s a demographic section, which can make disclosure feel less performative.

Q: What is the right etiquette when a lit magazine stops responding? I had a short story accepted about three weeks ago. It was the first time I'd ever been offered payment for my work, so I was really excited. They said they would send a contract, but it never came. I waited a week before checking in. Another two weeks have passed. How many more times do I reach out? How long do I wait between emails? This magazine does not allow simultaneous submissions, and I'm wondering when I should abandon this and submit elsewhere.?

A: Ugh this royally sucks, I’m very sorry. Since it’s been three weeks with no contract, another polite follow-up is reasonable. A good rule of thumb is to wait about two weeks between check-ins. If you still receive no response after another follow-up or two (totaling six to eight weeks since acceptance), you can gently state that, if you don’t hear back by a certain date, you’ll assume they are no longer moving forward and will seek other publication opportunities. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that, but you deserve clarity!

Have a question about submitting? Visit our submission helpline, ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.

Ahem, also! Please note that we do not give specific recommendations through our helpline. They must be general questions about the process, not just “Where do I send my 500-word story about diaper executives who start a cover band called The Doodie Brothers?”

Paid subscriptions are the only way we fund this newsletter. We are 100% human-made and paid. So if you have the means, please consider signing up.

Also, if you’re a paid subscriber you’ll find a downloadable spreadsheet at the bottom of this post with all of today’s opportunities.
