Come with any questions you have about submitting. I’m happy to answer anything I can. These are super casual. Time to submit your work with a bit of support.
This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Q: Last week, Shannan's response to a question included this: "As a writer, there have been several times that I’ve racked up 5-10 such 'special rejections' from a place before finally getting an acceptance." What if the "special rejections" are actually just another form letter but worded to invite more submissions? One well-respected journal has sent me 5 of these, and they're identical (or nearly so).
Shannan: Yes, I can understanding suspecting this and I have done the same, particularly when it comes to Narrative Magazine, since their submission fee is $25. So I stopped subbing there really fast (despite the apparent special rejections). Regarding other journals sending identical special rejections, that’s likely because most places have set drafts for different tiered responses so each time if you almost make it into the publication but not quite, they’ll be clicking their “Special Rejection” response template. If the submissions are free or the fee is the usual $3 (out of which the mag actually just gets around $1.2 I think), I would take it at face value that this is indeed a special rejection. But if the fee is unusually high, then I might think twice about submitting again.
Q: I submitted to a magazine four months ago, and while their website says they usually respond to submissions within two months, I have not heard from them. What is the etiquette around asking about the status of a submission?
Shannan: In this case, you should feel free to follow up now. Unless the magazine says point blank, don’t follow up at all (which, annoyingly, some do), you can generally follow up when it has been a month or so after their usual response time.
Q: I've gotten "positive rejections" many times with the encouragement to submit again. Is there a particular etiquette around submitting again? Like, do I mention in the cover letter that I was asked to submit again? Can I re-submit the same piece? Do I submit something similar, different? It's just so confusing to know how to proceed with the feedback that something was good but not good enough...
Shannan: Don’t re-submit the same piece, even if edited, but yes feel free to note in your cover letter that you received a special rejection previously. I generally say something like: “Encouraged by the special note on my last submission, I’m sending along another piece/set of poems. Hopefully these hit the bullseye!"
Q: A story that I love has been accepted for publication, but now I have cold feet. The editors provided very generous and thoughtful feedback, but they have requested a meaningful change to a creative choice in one section of the story as a condition for publication. I’m eager to have the story published, but I also believe in this particular choice and would prefer to wait for a publication that supports it. What is the best way to politely withdraw my work without burning bridges/hurting feelings?
Ben: In this case, I’d be polite and clear without making a thing of it. Inevitably you will burn the bridge (at least a little). It’s going to depend on the editor. But at this point, they’ve put a lot of work into your work and made a plan around it, so they’ll be a little peeved. To mitigate that, I’d avoid over-explanation or anything that could be taken as a judgement of their editorial standards. Simply something along the lines of, “I feel as though this change would take the story in a direction I didn’t intend. If that is a deal-breaker for publishing with you, I understand but will have to withdraw the piece.” And if they say it is dealbreaker, then withdraw. I think these situations can be professional and forgettable even if they’re a little frustrating. Where folks go wrong is when they start trying to justify specifics then everyone feels like they need to defend themselves and it gets messy. It is also important to note here that an editors feedback and edits are only that. You are not obliged to say yes to every one. Most editors will work with you until you are both happy. An editor with a my-way-or-highway vibe is kinda ick.
