11 Magazines Looking For Your Weird and Experimental Poetry (The Donut Monte Cristo)
All the details plus submission tips from the editors.
Sometimes the literary landscape can feel a little stiff. A little…uninspiring.
Perhaps it is because not enough people are embracing their weird. Or they think their weirdness, like their experimental poems, for example, won’t get published.
The journey to publication is a long one and often times it can feel like everyone else is getting published but you. And as much as we try to internalize that rejection doesn’t mean we are “bad” writers, or the notion that the “right” publication will find a home for our work in time, I’m sure plenty of you have questioned if its the work itself. That is just too…well, weird.
This week's list features 11 magazines that don’t shy away from innovative and experimental works of poetry. Which mean we are giving you permission to not only go nuts on the page, but to aim for publication too. The odds are in your favor here as more and more lit mags are encouraging you to push the boundaries of form, language, and content. So get your abstract narratives and unconventional structures ready. Time to hit submit.
For our sandwich this week, I picked something that was no doubt an experiment but one that seemed to have gone right. You be the judge.
The Donut Monte Cristo
Ingredients:
2 glazed donuts, sliced in half horizontally
2 slices of Swiss cheese
2 slices of ham
2 slices of turkey
2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Powdered sugar, for dusting
Raspberry jam, for serving
Instructions:
Place one slice of cheese, one slice of ham, and one slice of turkey on the bottom half of each donut. Top each with the other half of the donut, making two sandwiches.
In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Grease with a small amount of butter if needed. Dip each donut sandwich into the egg mixture, turning to coat all sides thoroughly.
Place the sandwiches onto the heated skillet or griddle. Cook until golden brown on each side, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Let cool slightly before dusting each Monte Cristo with powdered sugar. Serve with raspberry jam on the side.
Weird? But probably very good.
