Querying your novel to literary agents is the worst. Not because it’s so difficult (it is), but because when they say no, you know the exact human who is rejecting you. You know what their eyes look like. Due to the nature of employee photos, you probably know what their smile looks like, too. So you can visualize in perfect detail the unsmiling human sighing at that query letter before emailing you a template rejection.
But with an indie press? Who knows?! Maybe it was some rando person who had a bellyache or something. Or, probably, two of the folks at the press were dating for a while but broke up and one of them really liked your manuscript but the other, feeling jaded, decided to vote against it due to their personal grievances even though deep down they know it’s the fuckin’ best.
…anyway, here are some indie presses you can submit to without knowing what their faces look like when they judge you.
We even separated them by what kind of novels they’re looking for along with descriptions and notable books.
What lay ahead. Presses for…
For your angsty awesome YA novel
For Canadian authors only
For Canadians with feminist novels
For your experimental James Joyce meets Samuel Beckett novel
For a bit of everything except genre fiction
For your children’s novel
For writers living in and writing about the South
For your sci-fi/fantasy/horror/suspense novel
For your super-long Dune-esque epic
For your classic literary novel
For your sweet and zesty Middle Grade novel
And if you like indie press lists, here is another one we did recently:
