Come with any questions you have about submitting. I’m happy to answer anything I can. These are super casual. Time to submit your work with a bit of support.
This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Q: Hello! What does a "special rejection" mean? I've had a few rejections recently that have encouraged me to submit again, but these seem pretty generic and I wonder how sincere these appeals are? Is it rude to ask for more personalised feedback? All the questions!
Ben: This depends. I never count something as a special rejection unless they’ve mentioned something specific about my work. Often a rejection asking you to submit again is just the polite nature of a rejection. Sometimes it is “tiered,” but this is the sort of thing that causes more stress than it’s worth. If you’ve read and researched a lit mag and decided you want to be published there, don’t even read the rejection letter all the way through. Many writers are rejected dozens of times before being accepted somewhere. I think special rejections are nice, and if it’s specific, definitely send them more work sooner rather than later. But if it’s just a generic “please submit again” then ignore it. And yeah, don’t ask for feedback. Best case you’ll get a polite no, worst case an editor will get annoyed. Rejections are best forgotten entirely after you register what it is.
Q: How much does being published matter? Do editors look at your bio to determine your credentials? I am new to submitting and have been accepted at several entry-mid tier pubs and am thrilled because I used a target approach. Do the higher tiers reject based on previous published outlets? Thank you - your advice on this help line is invaluable!
Ben: Short answer? It doesn’t matter. Only the writing matters. Long answer? Not every reader is going to be mature enough to understand that, but most will. Imagine an inexperienced reader seeing, ‘The Paris Review’ in a bio, for example. They might give it a closer read. I hope this isn’t the case, but I’m not naive enough to imagine it never happens. But will non-prestigious mags get you a rejection? No, that’d have to be a real shit person giving it a read. And whenever I’ve been published in a higher-tier magazine, they ask for my bio after accepting, so I think more often than not your bio isn’t being read before they read your work at a place that would be big enough to have a hoard of inexperienced first readers. yeah, wow, so haha, long story back to short: don’t worry about it.
Q: Just a comment: I've had a poetry submission out at Bennington Review now for nine-plus months. I have politely queried the journal about the submission three times at this point: through their Submittable account, through their stock email address, and, most recently, directly to editor Michael Dumanis via the contact form on his personal site--this last admittedly because I was at the end of my patience. No acknowledgment of any sort so far. Slow is one thing; lack of response to legitimate queries is indicative of another level of administrative problems.
Ben: Submissions response times vary, though we aim to respond to most submissions within five to eight months." Is what their guidelines say. Unfortunately, with a magazine like the Bennington Review this can mean up to a year or more.
Q: One of my poems was accepted in a (non-paying) journal and I recently requested a publication contract to have proof of my authorial rights + any other publication conditions. I looked at their website and it turns out the works featured in the issue can only be accessed through buying the magazine through Amazon (…ick, but… ok, sure). I’m not sure how I feel about it being a non-paying pub that appears to be making profit + doesn’t have masthead info + doesn’t seem to promote its authors very much. As someone with only two pubs under my belt + the issue is about to be released, I feel like I’ll be missing out and inconveniencing the editors if I withdraw, but I don’t know whether I actually should or not. Help?
Ben: Withdraw it, for sure. No masthead is a huge red flag. No masthead plus making a profit without paying writers? No, no, bad news. It's not worth the credit.
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline.
And if you are a paid subscriber you’re welcome to our chat here on Sub Club where you can ask questions and chat with us and others about submitting.
As always, as an extra thank you to paid subscribers, we’ve included a spreadsheet download at the end.
