I might be feeling rather adventurous these days, but if I weren’t already moving across the country this summer, I might just consider packing up my cats and moving across the country for one of these jobs below.

While half of the jobs below are fully remote, as is always our goal, I would be remiss if I didn’t emphasize some of the amazing location-based opportunities. Hi Friends,

You want to know my favorite thing about writing? Each story is an opportunity to learn more about yourself. It’s often only in the act of writing that one discovers how they really feel about a topic. Tonight, you might write something that makes you say, “I didn’t know that was in there.”

This week’s pitch calls present opportunities to tackle some big concepts. One outfit is planning a double issue on the subject of “Home,” and they’re looking for all possible interpretations. Have you found home? Been forced to leave home? Someone is looking to read your story.

The world these days does not neatly fit into a box and you may be hearing that cross-genre work is all the buzz lately. Sometimes this looks like literary sub-genres getting ever more specific. For example, “Plant Horror” is a new-to-me sub-category even though it’s been around a long, long time. (Feed me, Seymour.) But, it’s also evident in the growing trend of MFA programs accommodating a student’s interest in writing across genres. Or, for the purpose of this newsletter, it can look like fellowships and residencies blurring genres in other ways.

Below, you’ll find fellowships and residencies seeking writers who are passionate about writing criticisms about visual art and grants for documentary film proposals, fellowships that are also residencies, and internships that identify as fellowships. Some prioritize study and learning, while others can probably also fit under the jobs category. A number of these are worth over $80,000. One of them pays for an entire MA in Journalism for six applicants.

If you want to get philosophical about it, you might say all writing (except for maybe writing about writing, which is very meta) is in itself multi-disciplinary work. After all, it’s a combination of the art of letters plus its subject (science, love, politics, etc). Writing is really a way to bridge the gap between hard facts and human understanding.

Which is to say, I hope you lean into combining your own no doubt multiple interests into some new and exciting, multitudinous, beautiful thing. If you are a writer who embraces genre-blurring and hybridity, there might just be an opportunity below to help you fund it, and fund it well.

“Atlantis, founded in 1971, is UNCW’s student-run literary arts magazine and a registered student organization. The magazine publishes two print issues and one online edition per year.

The training for this position begins this semester (Spring 2026), and the positions themselves start summer 2026 with stipends starting in the fall. This position is renewable. Atlantis is currently hiring for the nonfiction, art, copy, and layout editors. You can apply for multiple positions.

General Qualifications

Layout Editor

The layout editor for Atlantis is one of 10 executive staff members responsible for bringing life to the magazine. The layout editor uses the chosen images and prose to create the interior of the magazine as well as selects a cover from the batch of art and photography. The layout editor also helps create graphics for the marketing manager when needed.

Copy Editor

The copy editor for Atlantis is one of 10 executive staff members responsible for bringing life to the magazine. The copy editor reads and evaluates all the written work submitted to Atlantis, corrects grammar and punctuation, and assists the contributing writers with any necessary revisions.

This is a remote, volunteer position that requires approximately 10 to 15 hours of work per month.

The Fiction Editor is responsible for managing a small team of readers who rate and comment on all submissions and send timely responses, reporting to the Managing Editor with whom they will collaborate to decide what fiction is published, helping screen readers as needed, and helping put out PCR‘s first fiction call. They should have experience as an editor or reader at a literary magazine as well as familiarity with a variety of contemporary short fiction styles and techniques. This is a remote, volunteer position that requires approximately 15 to 30 hours of work per month.

The Social Media Manager is responsible for creating and posting engaging content on PCR‘s social media accounts (including Facebook, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and Instagram) in order to help grow the PCR‘s following. They should have demonstrated social media skills. Some experience on staff at a literary magazine (including high school, college, or internship) is a plus. This is a remote, volunteer position that requires approximately 10 to 20 hours of work per month.

The Production Assistant is responsible for helping the Managing Editor to gather information and media for weekly and monthly book posts and helping manage the general PCR email address, including responding to form submissions. They should have some experience on staff at a literary magazine (including high school, college, or internship) as well as the ability to use WordPress and Outlook Webmail. Hi friends,

Each week, I notice patterns in the themes that surface in pitch calls, signaling what people think about, care about, and read about. There are always calls centered on food, travel, parenting and domestic life, tech, sports, politics, and finance. What’s especially heartening right now, though, is the space opening up for conversations about human rights and the environment.

I believe art reflects our collective priorities—what we paint, write, sculpt, and create informs how we want to shape society. The writing that names our social challenges is often the first step toward addressing them. In exposing what we don’t want, we move closer to articulating what we do. (This may be why dystopian stories so often help us imagine a more utopian future.)

Lately, it’s encouraging to see growing room for stories—both fiction and nonfiction—revealing a mutual concern for humanity’s future. One day, future anthropologists may take a proverbial core sample of our digital artifacts and discover what we valued most. Even work created purely for entertainment reveals what matters to us.

This week’s list includes a pitch call paying $5,000–$15,000 for projects focused on climate and labor. The momentum around these conversations continues to build, despite policy still catching up. We may be living in a challenging timeline, but I hope you see every pitch call on a topic you care about as a reminder that an audience that shares your values is out there. This week, there are lots of editorial and reportorial jobs at presses and newspapers. But first, did you know that there really are high-paying jobs in publishing? Before I pursued editorial work, I erroneously believed these jobs were few and far between—the subject of rom coms, modern fairy tales, and my wildest dreams. But once I began looking, I found many doors wide open.

A job on this list pays up to 315,000 big ones per year. Admittedly, it is a senior VP position, but several others on this list pay well into six figures. And, aren’t we all working our way up to something?

Did you know that women typically only apply to a job if they fit 100% of the hiring criteria, while men apply for a job if they only meet 60%? My criteria for applying for a job? If it makes my heart beat faster. If you feel twitterpated at the idea of the work, and you are honest about your skills and qualifications, the worst that will happen is what they would do if you never applied in the first place—give the job to someone else. Or, maybe they’ll save your resume for a more fitting position down the line. But, you never know, you just might be the perfect fit.

While it may take some time to work up to, say, Senior VP of a publishing company, publishing is a fluid field with often flexible expectations. None of these jobs is one-size-fits-all, and many positions will take a chance on a candidate that doesn’t check every box if they have that special something.

This week, if you’re feeling spunky, consider applying for something that feels out of reach. It might be the first step to generating movement in the right direction, so that one day your dream job can be your reality. Yes, the time applying is time you will never get back, but so is a life only half-lived. Growth requires stretching toward the light. Go for the opportunities that make you feel alive.

Hi Friends,

There’s a whole smattering of pitch calls this week, with compensation ranging from very generous to payouts on the lower end. Consider how each might benefit a different strategy. You may only need one or two high-paying pitch calls to get ahead on your bills. Even if there’s more competition, your unique story and voice may be exactly what editors are looking for.

However, if you’re a writer with a slimmer portfolio, smaller-budgeted journals are often friendlier to less experienced writers, and developing relationships with a variety of editors can allow you to grow together. After all, today’s big journals were probably yesterday’s small journals. Someday, when they raise their rates, you’ll already have your foot in the door. And every bit certainly adds up in this economy.

Whatever your publishing strategy is, remember: in the age of growing concerns about AI, relationships matter more than ever. Be kind to everyone. Follow through on your deadlines. Write about what you know and what drives your passion for writing consistently. That’s how a writing career is built—one published story at a time.

Compiling this week’s pitch calls made one thing unmistakably clear: there are real trends in what editors want right now, and social justice is at the center of them.

If you’re anything like me, you’re cycling through the familiar stages of collective grief as you watch the world burn, wide-eyed, observant (of course you are, you’re a writer, after all), and feeling more uncertain than usual about your place in a rapidly changing future. Maybe you’re wondering what role you can play, or whether there’s even a future left to shape, and how you might be part of something that keeps the world balanced.

The good news: there are about a dozen journals below actively looking for voices like yours to engage with human rights crises, ethical technology, first-person historical accounts, rising authoritarianism, and environmental health policy.

Remember, friends: facts and statistics don’t influence decisions—emotions do. That’s the power, and the responsibility, of storytellers. In moments like these, we need real, human stories. And I’m willing to bet every single one of you has one worth telling.

I hope you have all returned safely and with dispositions intact from your annual holiday traditions, obligatory family visits, and last minute shopping missions with enough time to rest and your bellies full of scrumptious cookies. 2026 came in pretty hot with events that I hadn’t even had time to add to my BINGO card. There’s plenty to write about on the heels of the year of the horse so I hope your batteries are charged and ready to answer some exciting pitch calls!

I don’t know about you, but my NYE resolution is to use my voice to write more essays relevant to our current landscape, and contribute to restoring sanity to our dialogue and reassuring others they are not alone.

Hi Friends,

Here’s our last installment of Jobs for Writers before we take a little end-of-the-year hiatus. I think we could all use a reset after a doozy of a year like this one. I hope you get some luxurious mornings journaling in bed or some moonlit walks crunching freshly fallen snow. However you intend to spend these next two weeks, you might find yourself reflecting on this past year and I hope you take the time to celebrate all you’ve accomplished before setting new goals.

A helpful reminder for all you goal-setters: goals are most useful when they’re measurable, achievable, and part of a larger ecosystem of bigger goals. If you’re feeling fancy you can take stock of what you want to achieve in 10, 20, 100 years (because science) and then work backwards to help determine what your focus for next year might be. Maybe that looks like:

• A certain number of submissions, or even rejections (embrace the suck)

• A certain number of writing hours per week or month (or day? (⊙ _ ⊙ ))

• Finishing that poetry collection (the world needs your art)

• Starting the query process for the novel you completed as part of Kailey’s First Draft November (that was rad)

• Or getting that well-deserved new editorial job (I believe in you)

Hi Friends,

This week, it’s quieter in the world of remote editorial work as many companies prepare to hit snooze for the rest of the year. Still, there are some great opportunities, including paid positions with the Paris Review, Hatchette Book Group, as well as post-MFA fellowships, internships, and part-time gigs. You’ll find lots of lit mags looking to add to their volunteer reader team this time of year.

As the year draws to a close, my past life as a farmer has me thinking about the cycles of life and how the proverbial field needs to lay fallow to let the soil regenerate. As with all living things, we need periods of rest and rejuvenation, even some silence every now and again. This might be a great time to polish your resumé and sharpen your pencils so that you can be ready for new work opportunities in January.

I think the feeling of getting the green light on a writing assignment after answering a pitch call might be a lot like what being a spy would feel like (like the movie kind, not the ruining the world kind). You get an email that says: “Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to write about the best ice cream you’ve ever had. You have three weeks to complete this contract or it will self-destruct.” After all, being a writer is a lot like wearing a new disguise each day, except that each one is also authentically you.

Greetings, friends, from a windblown landscape dotted with red and yellow leaves. Outside my window is a world ready for change. Meanwhile, I’m getting over my third flu/cold/plague in 6 weeks (because I drop my kiddo off at a petri dish three times a week). There’s nothing like lounging in a blanket with sleeves with a trusty red dog warming your toes, breathing in the steam of a hot cup of tea, and sending out resumes. Ahhh, fall.

While, some of us might be winding down our job searches, others may just be getting started, hoping to land that perfect gig to begin the new year one step closer to being a new you…us…? In any case, I wanted to focus on jobs that don’t require moving to NYC or LA for those of us who can only handle so much change at a time.
