Last week, I noted that Romance Lit is $1.44 billion industry. Which is bonkers. Here’s another crazy fact: fantasy book sales grew by 45.3% between 2020 to 2021, more than any other genre besides graphic novels (yeah, check outs, people want more visuals less words, ha!). But seriously, a 45% jump in just a year is nothing to laugh at. I guess all of us were stuck at home with no end in sight of the monotony and terror of Covid19 so we needed an escape, right?
Well, that escape just keeps escapin’ because as of 2023, science fiction and fantasy are the most lucrative audiobook categories (a sweet $1.6 billion). I’m dropping millions and billions here like I know what they look like, lol. The fact of the matter of the point is simply this: people like escapism.
You can argue all you want about how SFF isn’t escapism but some grand existential commentary on the human condition but let’s face it…that’s also what literary fiction claims to be a lot of the times. SFF is…more (yea, not less. I love SFF!). It’s camp, cozy, magical, and sometimes super freakin’ weird. And guess what? These agents want exactly that.
