This week from our Sub Club Submissions Help Line:
Q: Keep getting high praise/personal comments from editors but then they don’t accept it. I’m sure I’m not alone & I’m baffled—no idea how to change their response
Shannan: As you might already be aware, these are known as “special rejections”. Weird word/phrase, I know. But trust me, as an editor of a mag that receives thousands of submissions a month, I won’t send out high praise unless I really mean it and want that person to submit work again. As a writer, there have been several times that I’ve racked up 5-10 such “special rejections” from a place before finally getting an acceptance. Hang in there!
Q: I recently won 3rd place in a literary competition, but the story was not published. The policy of the organization is to recognize the writers, but as of now, they do not publish the work. I've revised the piece and would like to find a home for it. How do I handle this if I call attention to the work being a "winner" and then shopping it around? Should I mention this in my cover letter?
Shannan & Ben: This is odd, I admit. If it’s a reputable place, I’d mention that it’s been recognized in a winner but was not published. Otherwise, it’s not worth it. The editors likely won’t read the work any different. Really, not publishing a third place piece is so odd that an editor might misread at a glance and think it was previously published. But you can note the award in general in your bio without connecting it with the specific piece.
Have a question about submitting? Ask us, and we’ll answer it in next week’s Where To Submit This Week. Visit our submission helpline.

As always, as an extra thank you to paid subscribers, we’ve included a spreadsheet download at the end.
