$200+ Payouts For All You Greedy Sellouts
50 Lit mags paying at least $200 for your beautiful words
How dare you want to make money. Money is just paper. You know what paper is for?
Art.
What? You need food? Psh, you don’t need food. You’re a writer. You just need angst and cigarettes. Cigarettes are how much?!?
OK, maybe you do need money. Fine.
So, I went through and pulled all of the lit mags we have that pay more than $200 or some equivalent. For example, I pulled mags paying .25 per word or $50+ per page though that might not always come out to over $200. But with most stories, it would. I focused on prose for this list since a poetry one would be much shorter and I’d probably start from $100. Though, for these mags, if they pay this much for prose, I’m sure they pay well for poetry and I’ve listed if they accept poetry.
I joke about payments and all that, but if you truly account for all of the time it takes to make a truly great story, even a magazine paying $1000 per piece won’t be paying you minimum wage when all the time you put in gets averaged out. Or maybe I’m a slow writer? Who knows. Either way, however long it takes, writers deserve to be paid for their work—ideally, paid well. So, enjoy today’s list. Lots of these are super tough outlets so good luck!
Keep in mind that payments in indie lit are so damn finicky. A lot are based on how much funding the lit mag has at any given time and they can vary wildly by genre AND print vs online. Just…read carefully before you start planning which mid-tier IKEA loveseat you’re going to make a down payment on first.
